Observations from a West Coast family

File: 2005

As Glynn just blogged about it, I’d like to congratulate the JDS team (and the Desktop Community) on releasing the source to the Java Desktop System on opensolaris.org. In particular, I want to mention the build instructions, which provide a very clear starting point for those interested in exploring the source and how to build [...]

Utility of a notched spoon

I went to a nice dinner a couple of weeks ago, to celebrate a couple friends’ visit to the Bay Area. The restaurant offered some tasting menus, so the more adventurous indulged in the six course offering, with a variety of tastes and textures. In line with current trends, flavoured foams accented between a quarter [...]

Forecast for coming late nights

I can see late nights ahead: there’s a lot of writing to do for work, and enough daytime interruptions and meetings to stop me from proceeding swiftly. Happily for those idle enough to read this blog, this new phase of sleep deprivation means the completion of assorted partial entries—and the release of the various pieces [...]

Over on mediacast.sun.com, I see Bob Netherton has posted a nice tutorial from Solaris Boot Camp, entitled “Migrating a legacy RC service”. The presentation covers the hiccoughs you might run into during your first conversion, and its step-by-step approach is very soothing. [ T: OpenSolaris Solaris smf ]

Arrogance and approachability

Although I have been writing a lot lately—slides, draft policies and processes, and slews of email—none of it has managed to reach my blog. I’ve been a Wall Street Journal subscriber since graduate school—skimming the paper in the morning is a habit I’ve maintained despite the hazard of having milk-sodden cereal hurled in my face [...]

High Hat, another Flash game

Like RSVP, the CBC‘s High Hat is another well-executed card game implemented in Flash. What’s interesting about High Hat is that it looks like a good candidate for playing with a physical deck as well. Maybe a good alternative to hours of War with Ben during the coming rainy winter here. Recommended.

[Reposted from forum thread.] I’ve had a few weeks to get oriented and thought I would bring folks up to date on the work we intend to pursue in the short term. My primary concern after an initial survey is creating additional infrastructure to get currently internal-to-Sun projects and conversations out in the open, on [...]

I’ve recently rejoined the team working directly on the OpenSolaris effort. The past few weeks I’ve been getting caught up on where Open is with respect to a number of areas, both technical and process. During my survey, I’ve been pleased to see how good the current technical team (“I-team”, or implementation team, in local [...]
