opensolaris.org: Java Desktop source release, and scfdot, too

As Glynn just blogged about it, I’d like to congratulate the JDS team (and the Desktop Community) on releasing the source to the Java Desktop System on opensolaris.org. In particular, I want to mention the build instructions, which provide a very clear starting point for those interested in exploring the source and how to build it.

I also wanted to point out that not only is a newer graph of the smf(5) services available:

but that, courtesy of David and Dan, you can now generate your own, using scfdot. Visit the smf(5) community if you’re interested.

    Cool. A couple of us (pre-sales and Sun Edu trainer) were discussing this graphic indeed as we couldnot find it earlier. It would be wonderful to have it as part of documentation to explain The Importance of Dependancy. A lot of people running their OS (Solaris 9, RHEL, Windows, AIX) without fully appreciating the complex dependancy.
    The more people know about what exactly supporting their mission critical system, the more they can sleep piecefully at nite.

    @iwan: I agree that showing the actual interconnectedness of system services is important for understanding potential local failures. I’m not sure that the full graph is the best place to start: it’s pretty large (and prints out nearly twelve feet long) and potentially overwhelming. If you’ve some ideas for how to make a more gentle introduction that leads to the “big picture”, please share! — Stephen
